Marisol Malaret Miss Universe 1970

 

Marisol Malaret Contreras (born on October 13, 1949 in Utuado, Puerto Rico) was the very first Puerto Rican woman to be crowned Miss Universe.

Miami Beach revelled at the 64 contestants gracing the pageant that year, the most number in the history of the pageant to date. On the day of Miss Universe 1970's homecoming, Puerto Rico's governor, Luis A. Ferre, proclaimed a half-holiday for all government workers. At her first press conference at Miss Universe headquarters in New York, defined beauty: "There are two kinds of beauty - inside and outside. A woman can be beautiful on the outside with nothing else, but a woman with beauty on the inside - that's perfect." When asked to compare older men and younger men, Marisol coyly replied, "It depends on what kind you prefer, and for what."

Gloria Diaz Miss Universe 1969

 

Gloria Maria Aspillera Diaz was born in Aringay, La Union Philippines. Often referred to as one of the Diaz clan in newspapers, Diaz was one of 12 children. One of her sisters, Rio Diaz-Cojuangco, was also a Filipino actress and beauty titlist, who died after a six year battle with colon cancer.

Gloria Diaz's ambition in life was to make as many friends as possible, and joining Miss Universe made her able to meet people, and foster better relationships with the delegates from other nations. Austria's Eva von Rueber-Staier, a semi-finalist, created a stir with her political judgment. She has called Mao Tse-tung the greatest historical figure in the world in her written interview quiestionnare. Eva would compete in Miss World that same year and win the title. This year, pageant organizers introduced the sound-proof booth and the final question for the 5 finalists

Sylvia Louise Hitchcock who hails from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is the 4th American to win Miss UniversePageant. During this year, fficials advised the panel of judges that “a beauty today must not only have a beautiful face, in perfect contour, but her torso must be be well-formed with the bustline not accentuated, and the back lines of the shoulder almost flat...” Pageant officials allowed contestants to wear false hairpieces and falls for the first time. Martha Vasconcellos Miss Universe 1968

 

Martha Vasconcellos (born Martha Maria Cordeiro Vasconcellos, c. 1948), is a Brazilian who became that country's second Miss Universe winner, after Ieda Maria Vargas first achieved the feat in 1963. She also became the fifth Latin American to win the title, after Peru's Gladys Zender in 1957, Colombia's Luz Marina Zuluaga in 1958 and Argentina's Norma Nolan in 1962. Vasconcellos is a native of the state of Bahia.

Martha Vasconcellos is Brazil's second Miss Universe. This was another homesick winner.The morning after winning the title, Martha Vasconcellos cried for her family and boyfriend. She had been supposedly engaged with her boyfriend since she was 12 and she had missed him so much While other contestants protested against being chaperoned all the time, Ireland's Tiffany Scales said she understood:
“Can you imagine the chaos if you had 66 beauty queens running around Miami getting plastered and picking up men?” Runner-up Anne Marie Braafheid of Curacao makes history as the highest placing black delegate as of 1968 in Miss Universe history.
